Who can submit to mygenderisx.com?

MyGenderIsX.com is for the non-binary community and by the non-binary community. We seek to highlight works by enby artists and writers that are about the wide variety of enby experiences, with an emphasis on raising up minority perspectives within the enby community such as racial and ethnic minorities, enbys with disabilities, immigrant and refugee status enbys, and other hyper-minorities.

From time to time, we will accept a submission from a binary ally provided that they are not speaking to the non-binary experience, are not advising the non-binary community, are writing only from their own perspective, and are providing a resource or perspective that has otherwise not been contributed by a non-binary person thus far. In these cases, the binary status of the contributor will be explicitly mentioned at the beginning of the article.

What kind of works do you publish?

We publish all kinds of works on MyGenderisX.com! This includes, but is not limited to, opinion pieces, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, news / journalism, reviews, visual art, interactive art, comix, community news, videos, performances, and responses to previously published works (here or else where). We prioritize personal narratives and op ed pieces, especially those of lesser heard voices.

If in doubt, you can contact us here with questions.

We occasionally publish about ongoing petitions or enby Kickstarters that are related to art or politics. We do not publish personal fundraising (GoFundMe). We avoid publishing “scare tactic” news or one-off stories of violence that are not personal to the contributor, with the exception of using these stories to highlight larger dangers and issues within the enby community. We generally try to keep it positive, but also know the value of realism and raising awareness of serious issues, and thus seek a balance between the two. Other difficult topics, such as rape, self-harm, and suicide, are published behind an 18+ age confirmation wall, as are erotic or explicit content.

We refuse to publish any works which are racist, pro-eugenics, xenophobic, transphobic, homophobic, nationalist, anti-immigrant or anti-refugee, or that call for violence against others. We may also choose not to publish pieces for a variety of reasons, including author’s affiliation with groups which promote or advocate for causes as outlined above.

You can find detailed information about or Community Policies, including our anti-discrimination, anti-facism, and anti-censorship stances, here.

We do not tolerate harassment or bullying, but do encourage mindful response pieces to other works that have been published on the site. Please contact us directly if you would like to submit a response to a previously published piece on MyGenderIsX.com.

What policies or community standards does Mygenderisx.com adhere to?

What is the review process like, and how is publication determined?

A volunteer team of editors and reviewers will assess your work to see if it fits with the standards and policies of MyGenderIsX.com. We typically reply to submission within a week of their submission, and if we are unable to do so we will do our best to communicate the delay to the submitter. Please understand that we are a team of volunteers and that at times we may not be be immediately available to respond to your submission, questions, or needs.

If your piece is a good fit for the site, store, or anthology, an editor or reviewer will reach out to you with any questions we might have about the piece. At this time, we will ask how or if you would like to be credited. There may be some editorial suggestions, such as shortening the piece, or grammatical issues that should be addressed. The submitter must approve changes (we will not publish a piece with any changes without the author or artist’s consent to make these changes). Refusal to approve the changes may result in the piece not getting published.

Editors may provide general feedback on a piece, but are not intended to be proofreaders of a submission, fixers of grammatical errors or spelling mistakes, or makers of content decisions. If there are few mistakes, a work will likely get published with the mistakes. Changes may or may not be made to a piece after it is published at the discretion of the editors.

If your submission includes facts or statistics, please provide citations at the conclusion of your piece.

If it is an abstract piece, such as a poem or abstract visual artwork, we will ask that you include a paragraph about the piece and how it relates to the non-binary experience, or how the non-binary experience inspired the works. Refusal to comply with this request may result in not getting published.

Our editors and reviewers are non-binary persons who have chosen to volunteer their time to the MyGenderIsX project. They represent a diversity of experiences, identities, gender alignment, and pronouns.

We are always seeking to expand our team of editors so as to better represent the wide berth of experiences, intersectionality, and identities within the enby community. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us! We’d love for you to join us!

Who are the reviewers and editors?

We ask that your works be specific to the non-binary experience or an intersectional non-binary experience in some way.

If you are an enby artist or writer whose works are not specific to the non-binary experience, we may still consider writing a feature on you (as a person/artist) or doing an interview. Please contact us if you have questions about this process.

Does my work have to be about the non-binary experience, or is it enough that I’m an enby artist / writer?

We believe that readers can and should make their own informed decisions about the types of content they want to consume. We also honor that some readers may prefer to avoid certain topics for a variety of reasons. As such, on some pieces of content we provide a brief list of topics addressed within an article at the beginning of the article.

Although this is not required for all works, it is highly encouraged for all pieces and is mandatory for any pieces which address or depict rape, incest, self-harm, suicide, hate crimes, erotic or explicit sexual experiences, pornography, eating disorders, addiction, and other topics at the discretion of the moderation team.

Why do some posts have content summaries? Is this required?

Although we do not have an exact limit on length of submitted pieces, we do ask that you be mindful of our volunteer editors’ time. Very long pieces may be asked to be cut down or published only in part due to resource and time constraints. Refusal to cut down pieces or publish them only in part may result in non-publication of the piece.

Anthologies may feature longer pieces than we publish on the site but may still be subject to limitations of length. Please contact us with questions.

At this time, we do not publish full works including full-length memoirs, comix, novels, or anthologies of individual persons’ works.

Are there length limits to what can be published?

Yes and yes! We would love to feature your opinions, experiences, and news articles from all over the world.

You are welcome to write about international non-binary issues regardless of where you are from or where you live, but we will always prioritize the perspectives of people who are living in or connected to the experience in a direct and tangible way.

Please avoid writing about cultures that you are not connected to or informed about. Instead, ask members of the non-binary community there to submit works to the site. We ask this so as to avoid unrealized prejudices, assumptions, biases, and prejudices that may result in writing about cultures which are not your own. This includes addressing sub-cultures, such as indigenous populations and racial or other minorities, within your own culture. If you feel that the topic is very important and not being addressed, we will dialogue with you and will run your piece by volunteer editors who are directly connected with those sub-communities to ensure an subconscious biases is eliminated as best as it can be.

We may ask for approval to note your direct affiliation with (or lack of affiliation with) the sub-community, cultural, or international location in an introduction to the work. Refusal to comply with this request may result in not being published.

Do you publish international works or works discussing international non-binary issues?

What about sub-cultures within my own culture that I am not directly connected to, but want to write about?

At this time, we are only accepting submissions in English (all varieties).

If you are fluent in non-English languages and would like to volunteer as an editor in those languages, please contact us! We’d love to expand to include other languages.

What language can works be submitted in?

Yes! We host all 18+, explicit, and erotic content behind an age confirmation wall. We will also require that a content summary of topics addressed by the piece is included in the introduction to your works.

Do you publish 18+ and explicit content?

You always have the option to publish anonymously and we work hard to protect your identity. If you would like, we can also credit you in text-form, or can link out to any social media or personal website that you want connected to your piece.

When an editor reaches out to you about your submission, we will ask if you would like to be credited, and if yes, how you would like that credit to appear. We can also remove credit if it is resulting in bullying, harassing, stalking, or if you feel unsafe for any reason.

It’s always nice to include a short bio, or even a picture of you, with your piece! However, this is not required for publication.

MyGenderIsX.com does not claim the rights to any submitted works; authors retain the rights to their works and can choose to publish them in any other capacity that they choose.

How are artists / authors credited?

If you would like us to interview you, showcase your work, or promote your business, please fill out the Submission Form and a volunteer reviewer will reach out to you to discuss this further.

Interviewing is an in-depth process. We can guarantee a timeline for when an interview will happen, or when the resulting article will be published.

You are also welcome to submit a self-written piece about yourself, your art, or your business, or submit one written by someone else with their permission to do so (this is required if you are not the original author).

How Do I get featured on mygenderisx.com?

Please fill out the Submission Form to begin the process of getting items added to our store. We ask that items are created by you and are not purchased third-party and then re-sold through our store.

We work with each artist to determine listing price, shipping logistics, and more. We operate under a fair commerce model in which the artist or author is always compensated on a sale-by-sale basis. There is no fee to be included in our store, but MyGenderIsX.com will retain a percent of the profits of the sale. Any profits kept by MyGenderIsX.com go towards administrative and upkeep costs and do not go to any individual volunteers or volunteer groups.

Artists may also choose to have a percentage of their profits (or their whole share of the profits) go towards a cause, non-profit organization, or other entity.

We credit each artist featured in the store and do not claim the rights to or the creation of any works listed in the store.

You can read more about our Fair Commerce Policy here.

How Do I get my art or items added to the online store?

What is the commerce model?

We prefer to remove author credit/link on a piece than remove it entirely from the site. Once a piece is published on the site, the MyGenderIsX.com team reserves the right to keep the content up on the site according to their own reasons and determinants. In cases of harassment, bullying, or other harm being caused to the author, we will consider removing a piece from the site. Please contact us immediately if this is the case.

If a one-of-a-kind item listed in the store is not longer available, or if an item is no longer available for purchase, the vendor must contact us immediately to have it removed from the online store.

If you need to update information in the piece, please contact us. This may include an vital update to your author information (such as a change in pronoun or gender alignment) or an update of facts or statistics within the piece. Factual and statistical changes will be noted within the piece; updates to your gender or personal information will not be noted. Small changes, such as grammatical or spelling issues, may not may not be updated at the discretion of the editors.

In cases where the piece or author has been linked to nationalist, facist, or other harmful groups, entities, or affiliations, then the MyGenderIsX.com team has the discretion to remove pieces or works by that author from the site. We may also remove any piece from the site as deemed appropriate by our team of volunteers. In these cases, authors and artists may or may not be contacted in advance to be warned about this removal.
